NEW ORLEANS — Edna Karr High School’s football team claimed its fourth Class 4A state championship in a row at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Prep Classic on Saturday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The thrilling game against Warren Easton was decided in the last minute and ended with a 35-34 victory for the Cougars.

“This was one of the toughest games that we have ever played in my 14 years at Karr,” Coach Brice Brown said, adding that they owe their victory to the amount of time the players and coaching staff put into practice and learning plays. “I give my coaches and players all the credit for being prepared.”

Karr Quarterback and Senior Leonard Kelly was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, throwing for 226 yards and rushing for 99 yards, both plays resulting in touchdowns. Kelly ends his Karr football career with a 27-2 record and two state titles as a starter.

This was the Cougars’ fifth straight trip to the Superdome for state playoffs and their ninth in the last ten years, resulting in six state championship titles!

Four Karr seniors can now claim to be part of a team that’s won the state title four times: defensive lineman Kendrick Rogers, running back Leonte Richardson, linebacker Joseph Thomas and cornerback Rodney Johnson.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of our scholars both on and off the field,” said InspireNOLA Chief Executive Officer Jamar McKneely. “This team’s tremendous achievement is one more example of how successful our youth can be when given the support and encouragement they need to shine. Congratulations to the players and coaches, as well as parents, staff, and everyone else who made this victory happen!”

With four back-to-back-to-back-to-back state championships and five consecutive A letter grades, Karr proves it remains second to none.
